City of Mississauga Achieves ISO 50001 Certification to Drive Zero-Carbon City Goal

Read how ABS Quality Evaluations (ABS QE) helped the Corporation of the City of Mississauga to achieve the ISO 50001 certification, solidifying them as the first Canadian municipality to receive the accreditation and furthering their goal of becoming a “zero-carbon” city.

Project Objectives

City of Mississauga Achieves ISO 50001 Certification to Drive Zero-Carbon City Goal

Project Overview

The Corporation of the City of Mississauga in Ontario, Canada, needed to achieve ISO 50001 certification to advance its Climate Change Action Plan, a 10-year roadmap to Mississauga’s greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs), and make the community more resilient to climate change impacts.

The formation of the ISO 50001 standard was initially requested by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and was published in 2011. It utilizes a plan-do-check-act framework supported by the U.S. Department of Energy in designing, implementing and maintaining an energy management system.

Acquiring the certification showcases the City of Mississauga’s leadership in conservation and its commitment to a becoming a sustainable city for its residents by demonstrating alignment with the ISO 50001 standard and the progression of its 5-Year Energy Conservation Plan.

CLIENT NEEDS
  • Obtain the ISO 50001 certification.
  • Confirm that the proper framework is established to support technical and management strategies to reduce GHGs and energy costs.
  • Make better use of energy-consuming assets and utilize energy-efficient technologies that validate the city’s commitment to energy conservation and sustainability.

Our Solution

ABS QE experts began by conducting an energy review to identify areas of improvement. This involved assessing the energy policy and verifying that energy-saving measures were properly implemented.

Value Delivered

The City of Mississauga has prioritized developing and implementing Energy Conservation Plans since 2001. It accomplished some major achievements through these plans, including its Energy Use Intensity and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions dropping by 9.3% and 8.1%, respectively, between 2014-2018. Additionally, the city has received a total incentive of $1,199,505 from utilities as a result of project and initiative savings.

The Five-Year Energy Conservation Plan was initiated in 2019 and is scheduled to be completed in 2023, building upon the standards reflected in ISO 50001. Achieving the ISO 50001 certification shows how energy efficiency can be prioritized as a way to both enhance the quality of life and safeguard the future. Mississauga continues to strive towards its goal of reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by 1 percent each year through 2023.

"By following the principles of ISO 50001:2018, we continue to stay on track with our target of achieving a one per cent reduction in energy consumption and GHG emissions each year over the next five years for our facilities. It also sets the stage for future City facilities to obtain this certification."
